Campaign to support Singapore’s SMEs
29 October – 1 November 2015

On 6th August 2015, the 99% SME campaign was launched to encourage Singaporeans to acknowledge and say thanks to Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs). The campaign is a nationwide movement to encourage customers to support SMEs by shopping and dining with them. Small and medium enterprises make up 99% of the businesses in Singapore and they employ 7 out of 10 Singaporeans. Singapore workforce

To acknowledge their contribution to Singapore, Singtel together with co-founder DBS, created this initiative to give focus and help drive sales for the 99% of businesses. Rallying other partners such as Mediacorp and Capitaland, and all the other sponsors this campaign pulled together resources from a few large organisations to provide SMEs with a free platform for them to showcase their products and promotions.

Speaking at the campaign launch event, Singtel’s Chief Executive of Group Enterprise, Mr Bill Chang told the media that the aim of the campaign is to get local consumers into local SME shops. He added “Singtel, together with DBS plan to make the 99%SME week campaign an annual event. We welcome the participation of other like-minded corporations – the 1% of large companies in Singapore – to help the 99% of the companies here succeed.”.

Senior Minister of State for Trade and Industry Lee Yi Shyan, who graced the campaign launch event, expressed that the competitive landscape for SMEs is changing and traditional businesses are being disrupted by new business models. He added that the 99%SME Campaign provides a platform for SMEs to market their products online and through this, SMEs can drive sales for their businesses. A few SMEs including Le Steak at Jalan Kayu and PetMart participated in the launch ceremony through video conferencing, pledging their support for this initiative. The enthusiastic supporter of the campaign, PetMart’s Benjamin Wee said: “This is a fantastic campaign and I will definitely support. This campaign will bring focus to the shops in the local heartlands and help improve sales for our shop”.

The inaugural 99%SME Week will run from 29 Oct – 1 Nov 2015.
